Just when you think you are Infallible

Reality sets in to show you you’re not.

I was out riding on Tuesday, when an SUV coming in the opposite direction turned left on front of me. I had the wind behind me and was going at a pretty good lick; there was no time to react and I slammed straight into the side the vehicle.

My helmet took most of the impact but in spite of this, I have a hairline skull fracture. I have just spent two days with the mother of all headaches, vomiting most of the time. This morning I feel much better.

The prognosis is that I will make a full recovery. The most annoying part is that I have severe double vision, so bad I am typing this with one eye shut. Apparently, the nerve that controls the movement of one eye is damaged.

My bike is in bad shape too; it will not recover without some major surgery. I can’t show you pictures as the bike is at the police compound; I haven’t had time to pick it up yet.

The driver of the SUV was cited to appear in court for failure to yield.

Y’all stay safe out there; it’s getting to be a lot like Christmas, and people are driving crazy.

Hope you have a speedy recovery. What a lousy thing to happen just before Christmas.

Dave, I identify with you through your quality writing and this episode was literally frightening. I wish you the best.

Celeritas said...

no disrespect Sir, but nobody's thinking about your bike.

Geez, Dave, Howard's really disturbed and rattled to hear this! If this can happen to you, of all people...

I'm glad to hear you'll make a full recovery, but still.

There are a lot of people (and readers) who care for you and will be sending their best wishes your way and thinking of you in the coming weeks.

Howard had his own critical moment just in the last week--with far less severe consequences than your own--and can only say, "God bless bike helmets!"

Best to you, Dave.

Dave,

Here's hoping for a speedy recovery. As far as your bike is concerned, I guess I am one of the "nobody's". I do hope you can find someone qualified to make the necessary repairs it may need. There are only a limited number of frames with that "from the frame shop of dave moulton" decal on the left chainstay, and I would hete to see one less.

Sorry to hear about this. Glad you're still in one piece. Good luck in your recovery and getting back on the bike.

Put me down as concerned for both you and your bike. Keep those positive thoughts going. We can't control the universe but we have a hell of a lot of control over how we react to the universe.

Keep rolling and remember you've got a lot of folks pulling for you.

This happens to even the best of us.
As many times as I’ve crashed (and been hit), I am fortunate to still be on the bike.
I think the time I don’t get back on, I won’t know I didn’t.
The bicycle community can learn much from someone like you. If it’s our choice, I think we’ll keep you around a little longer, if you don't mind.

Wow! Best wishes for a quick recovery. Given your interaction lately this is a little bit, I don't know -- whatever the opposite of providential is.

And we're cyclists, so of course we're thinking of the bike! :-)

Dave,

So sorry to read this and I am sorry that you were plagued with headaches there too. I hope that you are able to get back on a bike soon.

But, as all the others have said, very glad you were not hurt worse.

How freightening. Get well soon.

Our best wishes to you and most of all Kathy. She needs a strong resolve. I cared for my husband after a near death bike accident and it was possibly as horrible on the wife as the man that has the accident. Give Kathy our best.
